On July 30, 2014, the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), presided over by H. E. Chea Chanto, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, hosted its first annual macroeconomic conference. This year’s conference theme is “Promoting Access to Finance and Maintaining Financial Stability”. The purpose of this annual conference is to encourage and foster national research capacity development and policy dialogue on macroeconomics and financial sector development issues in Cambodia.
The theme of the conference was chosen in line with the growing recognition by the regional and international community of the importance of financial stability and that access to finance is a major contributor to inclusive economic growth, and poverty reduction. Cambodia’s economy is now entering a new phase of growth and facing both opportunities and challenges that need to be understood. To the same extend, financial sector has rapidly developed in scope and scale with deeper regional and global inter-linkages and risks.
In order to ensure that financial sector can support sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Cambodia, appropriate macroeconomic policy measures need to be considered and balanced by policy makers. In the years ahead, this annual NBC conference will serve as a public policy forum for relevant public and private sector institutions to discuss policies and exchange views on macroeconomic and financial policies in Cambodia.
In today’s conference, three topics were discussed: 1). Financial Inclusion in Cambodia; 2). Cambodia and Capital Flows: Leaning Against the Wind and 3). Cambodia’s Rural Development and Credit Needs.
The findings, discussions and recommendations from this conference provided inputs and consideration for the NBC and related agencies to formulate policies for sustainable economic development that can deliver inclusive growth, job creation, and poverty alleviation in Cambodia.
